  1. Barbados may have been named by Portuguese sailors in reference to the
  2. bearded fig trees of the island.  British settlers moved to the uninhabited
  3. island in 1627.  Sugar is a major export and slaves were used to work on the
  4. sugar plantations.  They were later freed in 1834.  
  5. Once a British colony, the road to self-rule was a slow process but eventually
  6. ended with independence in 1966.  Many British traditions are still followed
  7. there.
